Alpaca Blankets

The largest selection of 100% alpaca blankets anywhere: 25 styles and 165 colorways, every one handcrafted in Peru from baby alpaca fiber. Alpaca is warmer than sheep's wool at a fraction of the weight, naturally hypoallergenic, and has none of the itch — so these are blankets you reach for, not blankets you store. Throws for the couch and cabin, bed blankets in twin through king, baby blankets for the nursery, and alpaca duvets for the bed itself.

Throw blanket or bed blanket?

A throw is sized for one person on a couch, a chair, or a stadium seat — most of ours are 50" × 70", the oversized styles 60" × 80". A bed blanket is cut to the mattress: twin, queen and king, with enough drop to tuck. If you're buying for a bed, buy the bed blanket; a throw across a king looks like a placemat.

Alpaca fiber is hollow, so a king size alpaca blanket weighs roughly half of a comparable wool blanket and sleeps warmer.

Why alpaca instead of wool or cashmere

Sheep's wool is warm but carries lanolin and a coarse scale structure — that's the itch. Cashmere is soft but fragile; it pills and thins. Alpaca is as soft as cashmere, stronger than wool, naturally water-resistant, and hypoallergenic because there's no lanolin to react to. It also regulates: the hollow core traps heat when you're cold and releases it when you're not, which is why the same blanket works in October and April.

How to wash an alpaca blanket

Cold water, gentle cycle or hand wash, a mild detergent, and lay flat to dry. Never put it in a dryer. Pilling on a new blanket is loose surface fiber and comes off with a sweater comb. The full guide, including storage and moth prevention, is in How to Wash & Care for Alpaca Blankets.

Handcrafted in Peru

Every blanket is woven in Peru by artisans working under Fair Trade guidelines, from fiber certified by the International Alpaca Association. "Baby alpaca" isn't about the animal's age — it's the finest grade of the fleece, graded under 22.5 microns. That's what's in these.

Questions people ask

Are alpaca blankets warm enough for winter?

Yes. Alpaca fiber is warmer than sheep's wool by weight, and the hollow core insulates without bulk. A king bed blanket over a sheet is enough for most bedrooms through winter; add an alpaca duvet if you keep the house cold.

Do alpaca blankets itch?

No. Itch comes from lanolin and coarse fiber scales in sheep's wool. Alpaca has neither, which is also why it's hypoallergenic.

Can I machine wash an alpaca blanket?

Gentle cycle, cold water, mild detergent, lay flat to dry. No dryer, no bleach, no fabric softener.

What sizes do alpaca blankets come in?

Throws at 50" × 70" and 60" × 80"; bed blankets in twin, queen and king (king fits California king). Baby blankets in crib, stroller and receiving sizes.

What's the difference between alpaca and baby alpaca?

Baby alpaca is a fiber grade, not an age: the softest fleece, under 22.5 microns. Standard alpaca runs 23–27 microns — still softer than most wool, but you can feel the difference. Our blankets are baby alpaca unless the product says otherwise.
