An alpaca sweater needs less washing than almost anything else in your closet. The fiber wicks moisture, resists odor, and is naturally antimicrobial, so most sweaters only need a real wash once or twice a season. When yours does, here’s how to clean it without shrinking, felting, or stretching it.

Before you wash: air it out

Lay the sweater flat outside for 15 minutes or so, out of direct sun. Alpaca releases odor on its own, and an airing is usually all a worn sweater needs. For a small spot, dab with cold water and a drop of wool wash rather than washing the whole thing.

How to wash an alpaca sweater by hand

  1. Fill a sink or basin with cold water and a small amount of gentle wool wash — baby shampoo works too. Nothing with enzymes, bleach, or fabric softener.
  2. Turn the sweater inside out, submerge it, and press the water through gently. Let it soak 10–15 minutes. Don’t rub, twist, or agitate.
  3. Drain, refill with clean cold water, and press to rinse. Repeat until the water runs clear.
  4. Press the water out against the side of the sink. Never wring a wet sweater.
  5. Lay it on a dry towel, roll the towel up, and press to pull out the rest of the moisture.

Can you machine-wash an alpaca sweater?

We don’t recommend it for 100% alpaca knits. A woven blanket can handle a careful gentle cycle; a knit sweater has a looser structure that felts and stretches far more easily. If you must, use the wool cycle, cold water, a mesh laundry bag, and no spin — but hand washing takes ten minutes and carries none of the risk.

Drying an alpaca sweater

Dry it flat on a towel, reshaped to its original dimensions, away from heaters and sunlight. Never hang it — wet alpaca stretches, and the shoulders will keep the dents. Flip it once partway through and give it a day. If it needs smoothing afterward, iron on the wool setting only once it’s fully dry.

Are alpaca sweaters itchy?

The itch in sheep’s wool comes from coarse fibers — prickle starts when fibers run past roughly 30 microns, and ordinary wool carries plenty of them. Baby alpaca averages around 21.5 microns, so almost no fibers are coarse enough to prickle. Alpaca also carries no lanolin, the wool grease some people are sensitive to. If wool sweaters make you itch, baby alpaca is usually the fix. For how it stacks up against cashmere, read Alpaca vs. Cashmere. The full mechanism, with a fiber-by-fiber micron chart: why fine alpaca doesn't itch.

Does an alpaca sweater pill or shed?

Less than cashmere or merino. Alpaca’s fibers are longer, so they stay anchored in the yarn instead of working loose. Expect light pilling only at friction points — under the arms, where a bag strap rubs. Remove pills with a cashmere comb or fabric shaver while the sweater lies flat and dry. Brushed styles may shed lightly through the first few wears; that settles on its own.

How much is an alpaca sweater?

Real 100% alpaca starts around $120 and most of ours sit between $130 and $330 — men’s styles from $129, women’s styles from about $110 on sale — with hand-knit statement pieces reaching $750. A “wool blend” sweater under $100 is usually mostly acrylic or nylon; check the label for the percentage. And one term worth knowing: “baby alpaca” is a fineness grade of the fiber, not the age of the animal.

Storing an alpaca sweater

Fold it — never leave it on a hanger, which stretches the shoulders. Wash or air it before off-season storage, since moths go for worn fibers first. Store it in a breathable cotton bag or a bin with cedar or lavender, not sealed plastic, which traps moisture.

What not to do

  • No hot water. Heat plus agitation is how alpaca felts.
  • No tumble dryer, ever.
  • No wringing or twisting.
  • No bleach, enzyme detergents, or fabric softener — softener coats the fiber and kills its loft.
  • No hangers, wet or dry.
  • No long sun exposure while drying.

Cared for this way, an alpaca sweater outlasts cashmere by years. If you’re still shopping for one: men’s alpaca sweaters, women’s alpaca sweaters, and alpaca hoodies, with the exact fiber content listed on every piece.
